2.1.1 DEFINITION OF VIRTUAL MOBILITY

The European Commission defines virtual mobility as “a set of activities supported by Information and Communication Technologies, including e-learning, that realise or facilitate international, collaborative experiences in a context of teaching, training or learning”.(Erasmus+ Programme Guide, European Commission, 2019)[1]

This definition lays the focus of virtual mobility on fostering an international learning experience for students (VET learners e.g) by international collaborative teaching and learning. A learning experience can be organized in a variety of ways, using the full spectrum between entirely face to face/physical up to completely virtual or online learning, blended international learning and blended mobility is combining both face to face and online activities (Erasmusplus Programme Guide, European Commision, 2021)

Virtual Mobility means also "The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to obtain the same benefits as one would have with physical mobility but without the need to travel" (Source E-Learning Europa portal).

Virtual Mobility (VM) stands for institutional ICT-supported activities that trigger or facilitate international collaborative experiences in the context of teaching and learning. Some research experiences report the need to enhance Virtual Mobility based on open education principles. Open education is understood as a mode of undertaking education and professional training using digital technologies, included OERs and MOOCs.

Through the use of ICT, students and teachers can experience international exchanges of expertise while staying at home. As mobility and internationalization are becoming increasingly important in today’s society, this is a significant evolution for those not able to enjoy any physical exchange.
